Lightning hit the Bay Area and other parts of Northern California ahead of thunderstorms expected to roll into the region Wednesday morning, forecasters said. The National Weather Service counted 1,700 lightning flashes between 2:30 a.m. and about 6:15 a.m., and expected more throughout the morning. The activity was mainly centered off the Carmel Highlands and the Monterey Peninsula in Monterey County, with some lightning and rain recorded in the East Bay from Lafayette out to Antioch.
