Venture capital activity broke an all-time record in 2018. Last year the amount of money invested in private companies hovered around $131 billion. That's across 8,949 deals, according to new data published by PitchBook and the National Venture Capital Association. The previous tally was $100 million in the year 2000 (the peak of the dot-com era).
